DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL BOOKS USING SIGIL TO ENHANCE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN DISTANCE LEARNING
Abstract
This study aims to enhance student engagement in distance learning by using digital textbooks that are valid, practical, and effective. This study employs the 4D model developed by Thiagarajan, with the population consisting of all students at STKIP Andi Matappa and a sample of 24 students enrolled in the calculus course in the mathematics education program at STKIP Andi Matappa. The research instruments included a textbook validity assessment sheet, a textbook practicality assessment sheet, and a student engagement questionnaire. The analysis techniques used included Gregory’s validity index, a practicality test, a t-test, and the ngain index. The results of the study indicate that (1) the validity score of the digital calculus textbook was 0.83, which means it falls into the “valid” category; (2) the practicality score of the digital calculus textbook was 1,660, which means it falls into the “practical” category; (3) There was an increase in student engagement in terms of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement, and it fell into the moderate category because the p-value of the t-test was < α = 0.05 and the Ngain index was 0.72. A digital calculus textbook with a valid and practical design can effectively increase the engagement of STKIP Andi Matappa students in distance learning.
