Abstract

Social studies education can be reviewed from several dimensions which are the development of the review of the philosophy of education in accordance with the tradition of philosophy, namely ontology, epistemology, and axiology which are the objectives of this study. This study uses a historical research method with research steps including heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of the study show that the development of the philosophy of education can be described as 1. The dimension of the nature of social studies education examines the need for social studies education in schools, where the study of social studies education examines humans and their world. Humans as social beings always live together with each other so in learning, social studies education is needed. 2. The dimension of the content of social studies education discusses the organization of social studies education which can be done through Separated Subject Curriculum, Correlated Curriculum, Broad Fields Curriculum, and Integrated Curriculum. 3. The dimension of the purpose of social studies education discusses the purpose of social studies education where the aim is to develop student's knowledge, values, attitudes, and social skills to be able to examine the social life faced every day with the aim that students are able to develop knowledge, values, and attitudes, as well as social skills that are useful for themselves. And 4. The curriculum content dimension contains the content of the social studies education curriculum in schools, from elementary schools to high schools.
