Abstract

The global ecological crisis has triggered the emergence of alternative educational approaches that are more contextual and rooted in local culture. One such approach is the integration of local wisdom in fostering ecological awareness from an early age. This study aims to analyze how the indigenous community of Kampung Kuta in Ciamis Regency, West Java, transmits ecological values to the younger generation through inherited cultural and social practices. Employing a qualitative approach with an intrinsic case study design, this research utilized participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to examine various community activities, including traditional ceremonies, environmental taboos, and sustainable living practices. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that ecological values in Kampung Kuta—such as the sacredness of nature, prohibition of forest exploitation, simplicity, and communal cooperation—are transmitted through family interactions, the role of customary leaders, and cultural media such as folklore and oral traditions. Environmental education in this community is not limited to cognitive dimensions but also involves affective and behavioral aspects, in line with the principles of ecopedagogy. This study concludes that local wisdom in Kampung Kuta plays a strategic role in shaping the ecological awareness of early childhood. The findings recommend the integration of local values into formal education curricula as a means of preserving cultural heritage and advancing sustainable environmental education
