| Component | Preparation Instructions |
|---|---|
| File Format | Submit an editable Microsoft Word document (.docx). |
| Language | Follow the language requirements stated in the official template and Author Guidelines. Use clear academic language and consistent terminology throughout the manuscript. |
| Manuscript Length | Follow any word-count or page-limit requirements specified in the official template and Author Guidelines. |
| Title and Author Information | Follow the template for title formatting, author names, affiliations, and corresponding-author details. |
| Abstract | Follow the template for language, length, structure, and presentation. |
| Keywords | Follow the number and presentation specified in the template. Select specific terms that represent the manuscript’s content. |
| Citation and Reference Style | Apply the citation and reference style demonstrated in the official template consistently throughout the manuscript. |
| Page Layout | Preserve the template’s page size, margins, column arrangement, paragraph spacing, and heading hierarchy. |
Title
Provide a concise, specific, and informative title that reflects the manuscript’s main topic and contribution. Avoid unnecessary abbreviations, vague wording, and claims that exceed the evidence presented. Follow the title style prescribed in the template.
Author Information
Present author names without academic titles, followed by institutional affiliations and countries. Clearly connect each author with the appropriate affiliation. Identify the corresponding author and provide an active email address. Include ORCID identifiers where requested.
Follow the journal’s submission instructions when preparing identifying information for peer review.
Abstract
Provide a self-contained summary covering the research context or problem, objective, method or analytical approach, principal findings, and conclusion or implications.
The abstract should accurately represent the manuscript and avoid citations, unexplained abbreviations, and unsupported claims. Follow the template’s requirements for abstract length, language, font, spacing, and placement. Where abstracts in more than one language are required, ensure that they convey equivalent information.
Keywords
Select specific terms or short phrases representing the manuscript’s principal concepts, methods, subjects, or context. Avoid overly broad terms and unnecessary repetition of words from the title. Follow the template for the number, order, and separation of keywords.
Use the section headings, numbering, and hierarchy prescribed in the official template. The guidance below explains the scholarly purpose of the main components.
Introduction
Establish the research context and explain the significance of the topic. Synthesise relevant literature, identify the research problem or knowledge gap, and state the objective, research questions, or hypotheses where appropriate.
Make the intended contribution clear and support claims about originality with relevant scholarship.
Literature Review or Theoretical Framework
Where appropriate, explain the concepts, theories, and previous findings that inform the study. Critically connect these sources to the research problem and analytical approach.
This material may be integrated into the Introduction or presented separately where the template and article type permit.
Methods or Analytical Approach
Explain how the research or analysis was conducted. Describe the design, setting, participants or materials, data sources, selection procedures, instruments, data-collection procedures, and analytical techniques as applicable.
Provide sufficient detail for readers to assess the appropriateness and credibility of the approach. Report relevant procedures for instrument quality, research trustworthiness, and ethical oversight where applicable.
For conceptual or interpretive work, explain how sources were selected, examined, and used to develop the argument.
Results or Findings
Present findings in a logical sequence aligned with the research objectives or questions. Support them with appropriate evidence, such as tables, figures, excerpts, or analytical examples.
Avoid unnecessary repetition between the main text and display materials. Report numerical results consistently and distinguish findings from interpretation where separate sections are used.
Discussion
Interpret the findings in relation to the research questions, theoretical framework, and previous scholarship. Explain their significance and contribution, consider alternative interpretations where relevant, and address the study’s limitations.
Results and Discussion may be combined where permitted by the template and appropriate to the article.
Conclusion
Answer the central research question and synthesise the manuscript’s principal contribution. State implications and appropriate directions for further research without introducing new evidence or unsupported claims.
Article-Type Considerations
Where the journal accepts review, conceptual, or other non-empirical articles, authors should use a structure appropriate to the article type while following the official template. The purpose, approach, evidence, analysis, contribution, and conclusion should remain clearly identifiable.
Number tables and figures separately in the order of their first appearance and refer to each in the main text.
Follow the template for caption placement, numbering, alignment, font, and spacing.
Provide informative captions and readable labels. Explain abbreviations, symbols, and measurement units where needed.
Prepare tables as editable text rather than screenshots.
Supply figures that remain clear at their intended publication size.
Avoid repeating the same information in the text, a table, and a figure unless each presentation serves a distinct purpose.
Use labels, patterns, or symbols where colour alone would make distinctions difficult to interpret.
Identify the source of reproduced or adapted material and provide any required attribution or permission.
Define non-standard abbreviations at first use and apply them consistently.
Prepare equations using an editable equation editor. Define symbols and follow the template’s equation-numbering format.
Report numerical precision, units, sample sizes, and statistical notation consistently.
Distinguish direct quotations from the author’s own writing and provide citations with page numbers or other locators where applicable.
Explain translations where their wording is relevant to the analysis.
Apply technical terms, spelling conventions, and heading styles consistently throughout the manuscript.
Use the citation and reference style specified in the official DECODING template and Author Guidelines.
Ensure that every in-text citation has a corresponding reference entry and that every listed reference is cited in the manuscript.
Follow the prescribed system for citation presentation and reference-list ordering.
Provide complete and accurate bibliographic information appropriate to each source type.
Include valid DOIs where available, preferably as resolvable links in the form https://doi.org/..., subject to the prescribed reference style.
For online sources without a DOI, provide the relevant URL and access information where required.
Select sources for their relevance, credibility, and contribution to the argument. Include current scholarship alongside necessary foundational sources.
Check author names, publication years, titles, publication details, and identifiers against the original sources.
Reference-management software may be used, but authors remain responsible for the accuracy and consistency of the final references.
Present applicable declarations using clearly labelled headings. Follow the template and the journal’s policies for their wording, placement, and inclusion in submission files.
| Declaration Heading | Information to Present Where Applicable |
|---|---|
| Author Contributions | Describe each author’s contribution in accordance with the journal’s authorship requirements. |
| Funding | Identify financial support and grant numbers, and describe the funder’s role where relevant. |
| Conflicts of Interest | Disclose relevant competing interests or provide a negative statement where required. |
| Ethical Approval and Consent | Report relevant ethical approval, consent procedures, or an explanation of non-applicability as required. |
| Data Availability | Explain how supporting data or materials can be accessed and identify relevant restrictions. |
| Use of AI and Automated Tools | Disclose applicable use in accordance with the journal’s AI policy. |
| Acknowledgments | Recognise contributions or assistance that do not meet the criteria for authorship. |
Declaration requirements are determined by the journal’s applicable policies. Do not treat every heading as mandatory unless the journal requires it.
Where identifying information must be separated for peer review, follow the submission instructions while preserving all required disclosures.
Label supplementary files consistently, provide descriptive titles, and refer to them in the main text. Explain their contents, their relationship to the manuscript, and any software needed to access them.
Supplementary materials should support the article while leaving sufficient information in the main manuscript for readers to understand and assess its contribution.
Follow the journal’s submission, data-sharing, confidentiality, and permission requirements when supplying supplementary materials.
Consult DECODING’s Author Guidelines and Submission Requirements for journal scope, accepted article types, required files, review-file preparation, submission metadata, and the submission checklist.
Before submission, check the manuscript against the official Word template and verify the consistency of its formatting, citations, references, tables, figures, and declarations.
If the template and the published instructions appear inconsistent, contact the DECODING editorial office for clarification.
